ISLAMABAD The Federal Interior Ministry on Wednesday dismissed its Ministers Staff Officer, Sajjad Haider apparently in a move to save its skin after the Supreme Court (SC) initiated action against the NRO beneficiaries, who were holding high portfolios despite the courts orders declaring the Ordinance null and void. The sacking of Interior Minister Rehman Maliks Staff Officer appeared at a time when the SC moved against those who were benefited from the infamous NRO after the Governments failure to implement its verdict against the NRO in true letter and spirit. According to reliable sources, Federal Interior Secretary, Qamar Zaman passed dismissal orders of Sajjad Haider, Deputy Director Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and presently serving as Staff Officer of Interior Minister Rehman Malik. Sajjad, who is considered a crony and close confidant of Rehman Malik, was dismissed from his service in October, 2001 on charges of corruption levelled by the then interior secretary, Tasneem Ahmed Noorani and then he fled away to London. He was also a co-accused with Rehman Malik in the yellow cab scam. He was benefited under NRO and reinstated in July 2008 after Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)s Government came into power. Sajjad was also the staff officer of Rehman Malik when he was the Additional Director General of FIA. Kamal Shah, former federal interior secretary in sheer violation of the rules, reinstated him irrespective of the fact that an officer of secretary-level had no authority to reinstate an officer who prior to this had been dismissed by the orders of and officer equivalent to his grade. According to Interior Ministry sources, no action has been taken, so far, against Sajjad after the SCs verdict of 16 December against NRO but the move hurriedly came at a time when the SC ordered to send Additional Director General (DG) FIA, Ahmed Riaz Sheikh behind the bars other day while rejecting his pending plea against the verdict of an high court. The court also issued contempt of court notices on Secretary as well as Additional Secretary of Interior Ministry, DG FIA and Secretary Establishment Division for non-implementation of the courts verdict regarding NRO. According to Interior Ministry sources, name of Sajjad Haider has also been included in the Exit Control List (ECL). Further more, Interior Ministry has constituted a committee under the supervision of Additional Secretary, Nasar Hayat who would probe the whole matter as to how ADG FIA Ahmed Riaz Sheikh was given promotion to next grade by overlooking the fact that he was convicted on charges of corruption and benefited under the NRO. The detailed report of the inquiry findings would be submitted before the SC with in a week. The sources in the Interior Ministry also disclosed that former DG, FIA Tariq Masood Kosa had written a letter to the Federal Interior Secretary after the 16 December verdict of SC against NRO informing the Ministry that Sheikh was a NRO beneficiary and his promotion would be halted in light of the SC orders. That letter was disappeared in the Ministry and investigations in the Ministry were under way to trace the concerned official who intentionally misplaced the letter.
