Cheque dishonour suspect ditches police in court

A suspect on Wednesday fled from the custody after a court rejected his bail.  Anas Saleem, suspect of issuing Rs100,000 bogus cheque was taken to the Lahore High Court (LHC) where he acted as he had a heart attack moments after he was denied bail. Emergency Service was called in and the accused was taken to a nearby dispensary from where he run in connivance his lawyer . Justice Sardar Shamim turned down his plea for bail. –Staff Reporter

 PTI devises strategy for Senate election

Opposition Leader in Punjab Assembly Mian Mahmood-ur-Rasheed Wednesday presided over the PTI’s parliamentary party meeting to devise strategy for Senate election schedule to be held on March 3. The PTI has nominated Punjab former governor Ch Muhammad Sarwar for the Senate seat from the province. As 45 votes are required to elect a Senator from Punjab, any opposition party alone cannot secure a seat from the province in current situation. In the house of 315 members, 53 MPAs sit on the opposition benches. And, out of 53 opposition lawmakers, 30 belong to the Imran Khan’s PTI. The PPP and PML-Q have eight members each in the Punjab Assembly. There are five independent members while one each represents the Jamaat-e-Islami  and the Pakistan National Muslim League. PTI MPAs Waheed Dogar, Malk Tamoor, Arif Abbasi, Murad Ras, Ijaz Bokhar, Jazi Khan and others participated in the meeting held in opposition leader office. Mian Mahmood gave task to the MPAs to make contacts with other opposition parties in the assembly to get vote for PTI’s nominee. According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, polling to elect senators will be held on March 3 whereas nomination papers can be submitted from February 4-6 and their scrutiny will be completed by February 9. –Staff Reporter

 Commissioner for departmental coordination before digging

Commissioner Lahore Division Abdullah Khan Sumbal, has directed all development agencies to be in coordination with Safe City Authority prior to start their development digging.  He said that sequence of activities was important for smooth running of any development venture and that would save a lot human energy and expenditures. He said that there were many undergoing projects in Lahore and all were very pivotal and critical. He said that through very strong coordination, many harms could be avoided surely. He said that laying of fiber optics of safe city must not be disturbed by digging of other projects. Commissioner Lahore Division, Abdullah Khan Sumbal today chaired a meeting regarding damages to safe city layings in different areas of Lahore. He said that safe city project was a mega project changing scenario and image of Lahore city. All departments had worked together to complete the safe city project and now again that spirit was needed again to work in coordination.  He said that development agencies must send their supervisors with safe city authorities to avoid damages to safe city fiber optic.  –Staff Reporter

 Qadri in Europe

Pakistan Awami Tehreek Chairman Dr Tahirul Qadri has left the country on Thursday morning (6am) by a flight of Turkish Airline. A statement issued by the PAT on Wednesday stated Dr Qadri left Pakistan on an organisational trip to European countries. It is not clear so far how long Dr Qadri will stay in Europe and if he will return Pakistan from there or will go to Canada where he lives on a permanent basis for more than a decade. Dr Qadri made telephonic contacts with PPP Leader Qamar Zaman Kaira and Awami Muslim League President Sheikh Rashid Ahmed. The leaders, according to the statement, discussed the political situation and vowed to continue struggle to get justice on Model Town killings. –Staff Reporter

 PU students shine

The Punjab University students outshined in debate and bilingual declamation contests, organised by different institutions. PU student clinched 1st position in English debate competition held at University College of Lahore and trophy in Superior University’s bilingual declamation. While in music competition, PU students got 1st position in Fast University. Students have obtained 1st positions in Qirat, national songs and team trophy in English debate at Govt College in Jhang. In quiz competition organised by ICAP Lahore, PU students got second position with Rs15,000 cash prize. Also, the Punjab University Oriental College in collaboration with Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Centre Lahore held an international conference on Allama Muhammad Iqbal and Turkish Poet Muhammad Akif.  –Staff Reporter

Adviser President Farooq Adil, Director Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Centre Lahore Prof Dr Khalil Tauqaar, Dean Faculty of Oriental Learning Prof Dr Muhammad Saleem Mazhar, faculty members and a large number of students were present on the occasion. In their address, the speakers have urged the Muslims to unite in order to face the challenges of modern world. In his message, PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Zakria Zakir declared the conference would be a milestone between the two countries.
