LAHORE – Speakers at a seminar have stressed the need for joint efforts for building the nation.

Hameed Nizami Press Institute of Pakistan organised the seminar on ‘media responsibilities in developing countries’ here on Monday. PML-N central leader Ahsan Iqbal presided over the seminar while Jamat-e-Islami Deputy Secretary General Dr Farid Ahmed Paracha and known journalist Iftikhar Ahmed were the chief guests. Dr Rashida Qureshi and Fazal Hussain Awan also addressed. HNPIP director Absar Abdul Ali moderated the event.

Ahsan Iqbal said that there was need of self accountability and correcting the system to face internal and external challenges faced by the country. He said that putting entire responsibility on media was not justified and there was need for the entire society to play its due role to enable the country to face future challenges.

He said that political stability, good governance and social harmony were keys to make Pakistan a stable country. If the system works properly, he asserted, no one could succeed in destabilizing Pakistan through conspiracies. Referring to the role of media, he said there was need for the powerful pillar of state to focus on guiding the nation in right direction.

“Media is really powerful. As it is important in opinion making, there is need to use power sensibly and in the interest of the nation. Not only talk shows and dramas affect the people but also glamorous adds have impact”, he said.

Iftikhar Ahmed said that leading the country was responsibility of politicians and not media and they should be allowed to play their due role. He stressed upon people to bring leadership through vote and allow it to play its role. He said that criticizing media and putting entire blame on newspapers and channels without fulfilling own responsibility was unjustified.

“Educational institutions are not organising debates and other healthy activities. There is need to stop blaming others without fulfilling own responsibilities. It is not the local or foreign media but the people that have gradually removed nationalism,” he said, adding, instead of asking media to show programmes of their choice, people should change channel and go to programme of their choice through remote control.

Dr Farid Ahmed Paracha said that no nation could make progress without ideology and it was responsibility of media to play its due role in opinion making and nation building. He said that media should also play its due role to ensure timely elections.

He said media should also aware the nation that party manifestos were also important. He said that media was really powerful and it should use its might prudently and honestly.
