KARACHI – The Sindh government has imposed a temporary ban on bike/scooter pillion-riding, weapons display, firing of crackers and aerial firing from December 31 (Monday) evening till January 3 (Tuesday) midnight under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in order to ensure peace in the metropolis on the eve of New Year. According to a notification issued by the Home Department on Monday, the ban shall not be applicable to women, senior citizens, disabled persons, children below 12 years of age, journalists, uniformed law enforcers and employees of essential services departments. However, any violation of this order shall be liable to penal action under Section-188 of the Pakistan Penal Code. The notification stated that SHOs, their subordinates, ie, inspectors/sub-inspectors/ASIs would be authorised to take legal action against violators in accordance with the applicable laws.It said, “On the eve of new year, with a view to ensure peace in the city, Government of Sindh has under Section 144 of the Cr PC imposed a ban from sunset on December 31, 2012 to night of January 03, 2013 in Karachi on driving of motorcycles without silencer/mufflers; firing of crackers and aerial firing.” It added that carrying licenced weapons days would also be prohibited during these days. All letters issued by the Home Department to various persons allowing them to carry weapon in relaxation of ban had also been suspended, said the notification. Sources added that the ban was also likely to be enforced in Hyderabad and Khairpur cities.
