Former PML-N MNA Mudassar Qayyum Nahra was arrested after a court sentenced him to one year in prison with Rs2,000 fine in a fake degree case here on Friday.

According to details, Mudassar Qayyum Nahra was elected MNA in general election 2008 from NA-100. However, his rival Ch Billal Ejaz approached the election tribunal, challenging that BA degree of Nahra, issued by the Islamia University Bahawalpur, was fake and he should be disqualified. Tthe Election commission, after an investigation, disqualified Nahra on June 2, 2010 but he moved to the Lahore High court and later Supreme Court against this decision. Both the apex court upheld the disqualification and ordered by-election in NA-100.

Later, on the application of Regional Election Commissioner Masroor Ahmed Bajar, the Civil Lines Police registered a case against Mudassar Qayyum Nahra on August 11, 2012. The District and Sessions court Gujranwala heard the case and upon completion of trial, Judge Tariq Iftikhar sentenced Nahra to one year in prison with Rs2,000 fine. Later, the police arrested the former MNA from the court premises.

On the occasion, a large number of his supporters were present on the court premises who started protest against the decision and chanted slogans.
