LAHORE - The Punjab Food Department has procured around 2 million tons wheat during the first two weeks of ongoing procurement campaign, as the government is likely to touch 7 million tons wheat purchase due to bumper crop this year. Sources said that the Food Department has stepped up procurement campaign to purchase record wheat this year. Officials said that according to the departments estimate, the government is likely to procure at least 7 million tons wheat during this year and special arrangements are being finalised for the storage of wheat. According to the officials, Director Food Muhammad Shaheryar Sultan has directed District Food Controllers to submit a report regarding stock position of gunny bags after personally visiting their respective areas so that additional gunny bags could be sent in those areas where there is a shortage of gunny bags. He was presiding over a special meeting regarding stock position of gunny bags here on Thursday. Additional Director Food Dr. Altaf Akbar, Deputy Director Food Lahore Region and other officers were also present on the occasion. Director Food said that government is utilising all available resources for the supply of gunny bags to the cultivators and protecting their interests in the supply of gunny bags and procurement of the wheat. He said that Food Department has provided three crore 77,445 gunny bags to the farmers till April 29 while 22,14,598 gunny bags were distributed among farmers only on April 29. He further said that Food Department has so far procured 19,21,598 metric tones wheat from the farmers while 2,07,428 metric tones wheat was purchased on April 29. Muhammad Shehryar Sultan directed all District Food Controllers to look for such private godowns in their respective districts where the wheat brought by the farmers in their own gunny bags could be stored. He stressed upon the officers to utilise all their energies for ensuring transparency and success of wheat procurement campaign. He said that prizes and commendatory certificates would be given to the officials showing outstanding performance in the wheat procurement campaign.
