LAHORE - The Garrison Open Golf Tournament will tee off here today at the 72-par golf course of the Garrison Country Club. Around 300 golfers of the country will be seen in action competing for Rs one million prize money which would be distributed among top 30 golfers of the competition. Addressing a press conference Brig Naveed Safdar, president Garrison Golf and Country Club, said that the winner would get Rs 10,4000 besides trophy. Brig Safdar was flanked by Maj Nisar and Kh Parvaiz Saeed. Brig Safdar said that Matloob Ahmed of Lahore Gymkhana would defend the title. "A lot of efforts are being carried out for the promotion of golf and to bring common people towards the sport. Golf is being introduced in schools to being fresh blood to the fore," he said. Giving details of the tournament, Maj Nisar said that the event is being participated by 81 professionals, 23 seniors, 105 amateurs, 75 senior amateurs, 24 veterans and 15 ladies. He said that Bank Alfalah has come forward as the main title sponsor while Askari Bank Limited, KFC and Associate Groups are the cosponsors. Khawaja Parvaiz said that 18 holes game will be played daily for the three days from May 1 to May 3. "This is an open golf championship and hence the professional golf players will be the ones in the limelight. These professional entrants will be many with the top ranked amongst them representing a special breed; they have worked hard over the years and acquired enough golfing skills that enable them to perform superbly in golf competitions of this stature. Yes they may not win titles every time but they play brilliantly and cast a spell over the events they participate in," he added. Maj Nisar said that in the professionals category there will be a cut after two rounds; top 30 will play the final round. "The Garrison Golf Course is a challenging layout with a yardage of 6683 and some comprehensive work has been done on the fairways and greens to ensure excellent playing conditions. No doubt the out of bounds possibility on many holes will spread nervousness in quite a few minds and also threatening the players ability will be many bunkers and huge trees but then this is where the test of skill comes," he added.
