Rawalpindi - Westridge police, in a remarkable breakthrough, resolved the mysterious homicide of Shabana Malik, a lady polio health worker, by arresting the mastermind and four others hired to kill the lady, well-placed sources revealed to The Nation on Tuesday.

However, police kept the names of the main accused and four of his paid accomplices secret, sources added. All the culprits were arrested from Sihaam and Chuhur areas, sources said. The sources revealed that the main accused was the paramour of the deceased.

Shabana Malik, a lady health worker and in-charge of polio team at Moorat, a suburb of Fateh Jang, was shot dead by an assailant at her doorstep on September 5, 2014. Earlier, a brazen armed attack was carried out on the ill-fated lady on July 14, 2014 at Girja Road when she was going to catch a van to reach the Basic Health Unit Moorat where she was serving as polio team in-charge.

Shabana Malik had narrowly escaped death even after sustaining five bullet injuries. Separate cases were registered with police stations Westridge and RA Bazaar.

Sources told The Nation that police traced out the main culprits through mobile data obtained from cell phone of the lady adding that in the light of this information a raid was conducted at Sihaam from where the main accused was netted. The detainee further revelations led to arrest of four of other accomplices, sources revealed.

A police officer, dealing with the investigation and wished not to be named, confirmed the arrest of five accused in Shabana Malik murder case. He said that two other accused were still at large while police would handcuff them soon.

Sharing the details of the case, he said that a man, who was the main culprit, was involved in both attacks on the lady. “First he hired a group of assailants who attacked lady on July 14 at Girja Road but Allah Almighty saved her in this lethal armed attack” he said in addition with the main accused again engineered a plan to kill the lady for which he hired “paid killer”. The paid killer went to the house of lady on September 5 in disguise of an income tax officer and shot her dead as she appeared on the main gate of her house number 1081/5, street number 3 of Range Road.

Efforts were being made to arrest the two remaining culprits, the police officer said.
