Media depicts the intimate culture of any country as it has the power to change the course of history in the twinkling of an eye. It not only depicts inner norms but also the real circumstances and scenario of a country. Regrettably, though, the role of our entertainment channels is so lackadaisical that it compels one to question whether they are the true representatives of Pakistan? We still have the veterans that could produce a good drama but the Indian drama has practically taken over the waves. And our cable channels are mindlessly buying all their content. Award shows, dramas, reality shows and child entertainment programmes are being frequently picked up from Indian channels. Same is the case of fashion programmes. The dresses in these fashion shows would never be worn by anyone in Pakistan. The bridal dresses they wear can never be adorned by a bride in Pakistan. But that is what we are seeing on our channels. Sorry to say, the government has failed to screen content of the Indian channels. Where are the authorities that were supposed to guard our airwaves. -MARIA ILYAS KHAN BALOCH, Lahore, via e-mail, August 21.
