LAHORE - Information Secretary Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) Ashan Iqbal has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the PPP leadership to stop its vilification campaign against Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif or get ready for a similar response. He was addressing a news conference at the PML-N provincial secretariat on Monday. PML-N Lahore President MNA Mian Marghoob Ahmed was also present on the occasion. He said the leniency and respect for others should not be considered as PML-Ns weakness, warning that the party was ready for a tit for tat response to the PPP mudslinging drive. The ultimatum has been given at a time when tension are running high, as the leaders of both political parties are again face-to-face. Khawaja Muhammad Asif, a senior PML-N leader, has even suggested the party leadership to part ways with the PPP, as two parties cannot stay together. Ahsan Iqbal alleged that troika of the Presidency, MQM and the retired army generals were involved in the character assassination of the PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif. He maintained that the real game behind fanning 'old issues was to distract nation form focussing on Musharrafs trial, 17th amendment, 58 (2) b, charter of Democracy (CoD), rental power plants and sugar crisis. He demanded Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to look into the matter to unearth those who were sabotaging the reconciliation process. He blamed PPP for sidelining the CoD and suggested the PPP to avoid making a mockery of democracy. He said as Musharraf used MQM on May 12 mayhem in Karachi, the PPP had been using it for mud-slinging on the PML-N. He further alleged that President Asif Ali Zardaris friends were running the affairs of the PIA and demanded their immediate removal along with bringing the rental power issue in the Parliament. He said it was up to Premier Gilani to take a stance for saving the democracy in the country. Talking about 1992 operation in Karachi, Ahsan said it was launched against the extortionists, hooligans and dacoits, adding MQM Chief Altaf Hussain was taken into confidence about the action. He expressed surprise over the tirade of the MQM over the operation during and said it was more shocking as to why the MQM was zipped-lip on the similar operation during the PPP regime. On the statement of Altaf Hussain that he forgave the blood of his brother and nephew, Ahsan Iqbal said Altaf should know that both were murdered during the PPP-operation in Karachi. He said the Presidency was using the MQM for vilifying the PML-N leadership because it could not do so directly. He advised the MQM leadership to look into the matter for discovering those who had been using it. He denied allegation that PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif had received Rs 3.5 million form the ISI, saying the money distributed had nothing to do with the government and ISI rather then President Ghulam Ishaq Khan got the funds from a businessman and distributed them among the politicians. He clarified that Asad Durrani was removed from the post of DG ISI on the severe reservations of Nawaz Sharif. When Benazir came into power, Asad Durrani acted as her political advisor being serving general. During second government of the PPP, he was appointed as ambassador in Germany in 1996. And after just a month after his appointment, he submitted the affidavit in the Supreme Court regarding the distribution of money among the politicians, he maintained. He responded with similar accusations that billion of rupees were squandered from the national exchequer during the 2002 referendum and seeking PML-Q victory in 2008 elections during the Musharraf regime. He regretted that Musharraf was again active in hatching conspiracies but remarked that the people of Pakistan would not let any conspiracy to succeed. Ahsan said his party had not brought the resolution against Musharraf in the Parliament believing that if PPP did not voted in its favour, it would strengthen the dictators hands. He reiterated partys resolve that no power in the world could stop Musharrafs trial and said if present government dragged its feet, the next would do it.
