ISLAMABAD - Former director general Pakistan Sports Board Dr Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera is using every trick in his pocket to get back PSB Director General slot on ad-hoc basis.

The sources in the PSB have confirmed The Nation that Ganjera is frequently visiting Acting DG office and also met with IPC Minister Dr Fahmida Mirza in this regard but he was flatly refused.

Another retired Army official Lt Col (R) Wasim Ahmed Janjua, who is also president of Pakistan Taekwondo Federation (PTF), is using his good offices to get PSB DG slot and also offered to work without taking salary and is being backed by Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) president Lt Gen (R) Syed Arif Hassan, who is enjoying fourth term as POA chief and is well-known to pass on benefits to his near and dear ones.

In case Col (R) Wasim gets the job, it will be Gen Arif, who will make all the shots. Despite inflicting huge miseries on Pakistan sports, as his tenures and pathetic performance of Pakistani players at international level are no secret to everybody, Gen Arif is still keen to carry on and also want to have his blue-eyed persons in the PSB as well. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) should mind their own business, as they back Gen Arif just to get vote from him, or else they are not bothered, what Gen Arif has done for Pakistan sports.

Sporting circles have time and again requested governments to look into sorry state-of-affairs of POA and other non-performing federations and now they have pinned high hopes in the present government and are optimistic that Prime Minister Imran Khan will revive the fast-declining fortunes of Pakistan sports and provide justice to long-suffering athletes, coaches and genuine officials, who are long sidelined by blue-eyed persons, despite having no knowledge of basic of sports, but clinging on to their positions due to their political backgrounds.

Ganjera is in no mood of vacating the lavish 5-kanal residence inside the PSB premises, which is under his possession for the last several years and not only Ganjera and his family, but also his close relatives are enjoying perks and privileges and there is no one who could dare to vacate the residence from Ganjera’s possession. The Ganjera’s reside was meant for women hostel, but with help of PSB executive committee, he managed to get the building for his residence.

When this scribe met PSB Director Media M Azam Dar to seek his point of view in this regard, as according to government rule, retired officials are allowed to utilise official residence for six months after retirement, but now that period also expired, Dar said: “It is a set rule for all. Whether it is Ganjera or any other official, after completion of 6-month relaxation period, everyone has to vacate one’s residence in the PSB premises.”

Ganjera managed to get extension from caretaker IPC Minister Azam Khan and promised to pay rent and utility bills while his file is pending with Acting Director General Arif Ibrahim. Dar confirmed that the file was moved to DG, but he had yet to sign on it. When asked whether DG or any other official can bypass Supreme Court orders and allow Ganjera to keep hold of the residence for another 6 months, Dar said: “No one is above law. We will decide as per rules and regulations and we can’t even think about disobeying orders of Supreme Court.”

On this, Acting DG Arif Ibrahim said: “Yes, I have received the file but I can’t act and referred the case to PSB executive committee to decide as per rules.” About executive committee and its decision on this case, he said: “The entire PSB executive committee will be formed based on fresh members to ensure justice should prevail.”
