LAHORE - A red carpet welcome was accorded to Turkish President Abdullah Gul on his arrival here from Islamabad on a two-day visit Thursday. The Turkish President was accorded a warm welcome at the old airport when he alighted from his plane. Governor Punjab Salman Taseer, Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, Speaker Punjab Assembly Rana Muhammad Iqbal, Senior Provincial Minister Raja Riaz Ahmad, Provincial ministers and high-ranking officials received the dignitary, who was also accompanied by Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik and 200 member Turkish delegation of businessmen, traders and government officials. The special plane carrying Turkish President and his delegation landed at the airport at 11:38am and President alighted from the plane around midday after the security persons had inspected last moment security steps. Two children presented bouquet to the Turkish President and a smartly turned out army band played tunes to welcome the dignitary to the historic city of Lahore. A contingent of the Rangers presented guard of honour to the Turkish President. City roads were decorated with colourful flags and banners inscribed with slogans Pak-Turk friendship Zindabad along the route to the Iqbals mausolem, where the Turkish President went as first leg of visit. A large number of people were present on both sides of the road and waved to welcome the Turkish President. People also raised slogans celebrating Pak-Turk Friendship Zindabad while at some places people were found dancing to welcome the guest. The Turkish President laid floral wreath at the mausoleum of national poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal, and offered Fateha. Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rahman Malik and accompanied. At mausoleum Khateeb Badshahi Masjid led dua wherein he prayed for further strengthening of Pakistan-Turkey ties. Later the visiting dignitary went to Badshahi Masjid and moved to its various parts. Kahteeb of the Masjid informed the visiting guest about the architect and aesthetic aspects of this masterpiece of Mughal era. Turkish President highly praised the rare articles placed at Museum of the Masjid. After the Badshahi Masjid visit, the Turkish President came to PC Hotel along with Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and attended Pak-Turkey CEO forum. Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif addressed in Urdu while Turkish President Abdullah Gul spoke in Turkish. After that, the Turkish President and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif went to Raiwind by road to attend a luncheon hosted by PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif. Huge portraits of Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif were installed along the route. Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Nisar Ali Khan, Federal Minister Rehman Malik, Senator Pervez Rashid and Senator Ishaq Dar also attended the luncheon. The Turkish President also witnessed Horse and Cattle Show, tent pegging and polo match at the Polo Ground. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif gifted a pedigree horse to the distinguished guest. At least 8,000 police officers including 2,000 traffic officials including DSPs, SPs, inspectors and wardens were deployed on all routes and main arteries of the provincial metropolis during Guls visit.
