The dwellers of Garhi Awan, almost half of the city, have protested against the non-functioning of water supply in the locality despite completion of a water supply scheme about ten years back.

The water supply scheme was completed at a cost of Rs130 million as many as ten years back by the Public Health Engineering Department but the TMA Hafizabad has not yet taken over the project due to, what was officially alleged, pipelines had not been properly laid. Since then there was a tussle going on between the PHED and TMA, depriving the dwellers of the locality potable water.

According to official sources, the electric motors installed for tube-wells and other accessories were rusting and inflicting huge loss on the national exchequer.

About a month back, the matter was brought into the attention of Acting DCO Safeena Siddique to carry out a third party inspection of the completed project so as to rectify the defects and other irregularities or bunglings, if any. However, the DCO, despite assurance that she would order for a third party inspection so that the project can be handed over to the TMA, has failed to fulfil her promise so far.

Scores of dwellers of over 8 million population have called upon the DCO, Commissioner and the Punjab Chief Minister to set up a committee to ascertain real facts regarding non-operation of the water supply and refusal of the TMA to take over the project and fix responsibility for the loss of machinery which was rusting due to tug-of-war among government departments.
