islamabad - Former Ambassador of Pakistan to Nigeria, Maj Gen (Retd) Asif Duraiz Khan, has said that sports plays an important role in personality development of students and they cannot be able to meet the mental and physical health requirements, which are pivotal to seek education, without taking part in sports activities.

He expressed these views while addressing to the prize distribution ceremony of Annual Sports of Anjuman Faizul Islam (AFI) here the other day.  AFI President Mian Mohammad Siddique Akbar, VP Prof Aziz Hashmi, Maj (Retd) Basharat Kiani, Prof Niaz Irfan, other office-bearers and a large number of students of educational institutions of AFI were present on the occasion. Taking active part in annual sports, Faizul Islam Model Secondary School of AFI Faizabad took overall first position in different sports games including long jump, tug of war, 200 metre race etc.

Asif Duraiz Khan said games are integral part of education and in our society, most educational institutions do not take care of it. He said sports and games helped in character building of students and gave them energy and strength to bear the stresses of education and absorb knowledge.

“A sound mind depends on sound body and that is possible only by promoting sports activities in educational institutions,” he mentioned. Asif Duraiz Khan also admired the administration of AFI for keeping the games as a part of education.

President AFI Mian Mohammad Siddique Akbar, while addressing to the students and teachers on this occasion, said besides comradeship, games provide good training in discipline and organisation. He said keeping this in mind, AFI organises various sports events on regular basis so that students can stay mentally and physically fit.

He also threw light on the history of AFI and said this prestigious institution was established 4 years before Pakistan came into being on the desire and instruction of father of the nation Quid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah. “Since then we are providing the orphans with the best food, shelter and education to enable them become a useful citizens of our dear homeland.

Later, the chief guest gave away prizes to the position holder students and their trainers.
