SUKKUR  - Calling the presence of the United States in Afghanistan a threat to the regional peace, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Sunday called for a consensus on issues directly concerning Pakistan’s sovereignty and stability.

US troops presence in Afghanistan and the superpower’s interference in regional issues were not in the interest of the region, Rehman said as he gave a unity call to end American drone strikes.

"The nation should unite to stop these attacks which violate Pakistan's sovereignty," he affirmed while talking to a group of reporters at the Sukkur airport.

Rehman called on the government to initiate a dialogue with the Taliban to establish peace in the country. All the political parties had already given the mandate to the government in this respect, he added.

Rehman, to a question‚ said Pakistan desired cordial relations with all of its neighbours.

The JUI-F chief expressed reservations over newly-promulgated Pakistan Protection Ordinance, 2013, saying it was in violation of fundamental human rights that was not acceptable to his party.

The nationalist parties in Sindh had already rejected the ordinance and observed shutter-down strikes across the province over the past two months.

Also, Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain had termed the ordinance as “authoritarian”, “undemocratic” and “unconstitutional”. Hussain, in a statement last week, demanded the government to withdraw the ordinance.

Blocking NATO supply will

increase unemployment:  Altaf

Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain has said that blocking the NATO supply will increase unemployment in the country.

Addressing a public gathering here, MQM chief said that blocking NATO was an unwise decision of PTI-led government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Altaf Hussain said that protesting at the NATO supply routes will make poor truck drivers jobless.

He asked Pakistan Tahrik-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) to stage protest demo outside Prime Minister’s House and ask the government and Armed Forces to shoot down drones.

The MQM chief further said that the Ameer JI, Syed Munawar Hassan should have been prosecuted under Article 6 of the Constitution for declaring Hakeemullah Mehsud as Martyr.
