LAHORE - Dav Whatmore has resigned as head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders an IPL franchise. His coaching contract was up to May 2012 with Kolkata team but Whatmore opted out just before the start of the fourth edition of the IPL. His premature resign backs the reports regarding his appointment as Pakistan’s new. He is reaching Pakistan on the second week of January to finalise the terms and conditions of contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), it is .reliably learnt on Sunday.

Whatmore will reach Australia and likely to contact Pakistan High Commission in Australia for visa on January 4 and will reach here in the second week of this month to finalise his agreement with the PCB. Earlier during a meeting last year with the concerned officials Whatmore had reportedly demanded a role in team’s selection and this demand was opposed by the team management and some senior players.  Earlier in 1996 Whatmore, had a successful stint as coach of Sri Lanka and during his coaching period Lankans won the 1996 World Cup by defeating Australia in the final played at Gaddafi Stadium and later served in Bangladesh, and is currently coaching Kolkata Knight Riders, the Indian Premier League franchise.

If the PCB and Whatmore agreed over terms and condition then Whatmore will take over as head coach of Pakistan in March 2012 prior to start of the Asia Cup being commenced from March 1-12 in Bangladesh.

Mohsin Khan, who is currently coaching the national team on interim basis, has also shown interest in signing a long-term contract with the PCB. But it is understood that concerned authorities are more interested in roping in Whatmore for the job.

"PCB may be inclined towards the Whatmore option but the fact is that it is keeping all options open," said the source.

If Pakistan win the series against England in United Arab Emirates under the coaching of Mohsin Khan then PCB may face some difficulty in choosing the head coach.

Meanwhile, Fountain will arrive in Pakistan in couple of days prior to start of the Pakistan team conditioning camp and will also attend the camp after finalising the terms of conditions of his contract that was delayed due to some flaws in the package.
