LAKKI MARWAT - Speakers at a seminar have called upon the provincial and federal governments to increase allocations in the budget for agriculture sector as over 70 percent population of the country is dependent on this sector.

The district chapter of Model Farm Services Centre with the support of Agriculture Department had arranged the seminar at the district headquarters complex Tajazai on Wednesday.

Lakki District Director Agriculture Ahmad Nawaz presided the event while Bannu District Director Agriculture Dr Hussain Ahmad was the chief guest.

Speakers included MFSC President Sifatullah Khan, General Secretary Hameed Khan Meenakhel, former district nazim advocate Qudratullah Khan, Sahibzada Qudratullah and Ameer Muhammad Khan.

They said that the government should provide the farmers with perks and privileges and facilities extended by the Punjab government to the growers. They asked the government to increase the number of demonstration plots and make soil testing laboratory in the district fully functional.

They also demanded setting up of Barani research station, fruit nurseries and orchards in the district.

On the occasion, Dr Hussain said that under Sustainable Agriculture Development Programme the government would develop the agri sector through public-private partnership activities.

He said that new technologies would be introduced to enable the farmers to take advantage of them and increase per acre produce.

He also said that under the programme tube wells would be sunk and solar system would be installed to run them so that farmers could get sufficient water for their fields.

Meanwhile, the civil administration and army officials reiterated their firm determination to take allout measures for the security of educational institutions in the district.

They expressed the determination at a meeting held here in the district council hall at the district headquarters complex Tajazai.

The deputy commissioner reiterated that the government would take allout measures to provide maximum security to the schools and college so Peshawar like terror incident could not take place in future.
