LONDON -One Direction’s Liam Payne has apologised after a video showing some band members appearing to smoke ‘a joint’ appeared online.

Writing on Twitter, the singer said things had ‘gone a little sideways’. It’s the first time a member of the group has made a comment since the footage emerged from the Peru leg of their world tour. A spokesperson for the band said at the time the issue was in the hands of their lawyers.

Liam started his Twitter chat by referring to an article in a paper he’d read about the band after the video emerged of Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik last week. ‘We all have a lot of growing up to do in an extreme circumstance. I’m not making excuses but it’s fact we are going to fall short somewhere’. He also thanked fans for sticking with the band. ‘I love my boys and maybe things have gone a little sideways I apologise for that’. Payne added: ‘We are only in our 20’s we all do stupid things at this age.’ ‘Hopefully we stand the test of time an get it right in the end I don’t take this for granted and I’m extremely grateful to be here doing this.’

In the footage, Tomlinson and Malik were heard joking about ‘illegal substances’ as they smoked a rolled-up cigarette in the back of a car. Tomlinson, who is believed to have filmed the five-minute video, was heard saying: ‘So here we are, leaving Peru. Joint lit. Happy days. Malik was then passed the ‘joint’ and began smoking. The video was published by the MailOnline which claims it was filmed on 27 April while the singers were being driven through Peru on their way to a concert at the Estadio Nacional in Lima. So far, neither Malik nor Tomlinson have released any official statement on the video.
