Five policemen were suspended after two accused chopped off their hands at Gaggo Mandi police station after alleged police torture.

The regional police officer suspended Station House Officer Muhammad Aslam Cheema, Sub Inspector Naveed Ahmad, Moharar Muhammad Afzal, Naib Mohrar Naeem Shoukat and constable Mushtaq Ahmad and a case has been registered against them.

The police had arrested three accused including Ghulam Mustafa, a resident of Chak 102/EB, Liaquat Ali Joyia of Chak 353/EB Jaranwala and Nazir Ahmad of Raiwind on May 25 on charges of stealing electric wires. The police allegedly tortured them for the recovery of the loot and locked them in the station lock-up. While the constable was asleep, Ghulam Mustafa and Liquat chopped off their hands with a sharp edged weapon. Hearing about the incident, the SHO reached there and shifted the seriously injured person to BVH Bahawalpur and Liaquat Ali was shifted to local hospital for medical attention.

Vehari DPO Sadiq Ali Dogar rushed to the spot, suspended and ordered arrest of the Moharar and the constable. He also ordered the registration of a case Under Section 155-C of Police Ord 2002 against them.

Later, Multan RPO Amjad Javed Saleemi and SSP Crime Branch Kamran Adil also reached the police station and recorded the statement of other accused Nazir Ahmad. The RPO suspended the five policemen. He also rebuked DPO Sadiq Ali Dogar for negligence.

Meanwhile, DPO Sadiq Ali Dogar has said that the two accused who chopped off their hands in lock-ups of Gaggo Mandi Police have confessed that they have committed the crime themselves. Talking to local journalists here, Sadiq Dogar said that it was police duty to record statement of the accused after gaining senses and both accused in presence of doctors had confessed that they had chopped of their hands with sharp edge blades in the midnight when the all detainees and police officials were asleep.
