LAHORE - National champions WAPDA made flying start in the National Football Challenge Cup (NFCC) 2008 with a thumping 9-0 win over Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) at Karachi's Peoples Sports Complex. The 15-day event, limited for departmental/services outfits, exploded into action on Labour day with two matches. The other match  was arranged at CDGK Stadium (formerly KMC Stadium) that provided scoreline: Navy 2 PEL 0. Three gold medallists in SAF Games at Islamabad four years ago were the heroes in WAPDA's impressive win. Two of them - Arif Mehmood, Qamar Zaman - earned the hat-tricks while Imran Niazi hammered two goals. Ageing Jacobabad born Khuda Bakhsh was the other scorer. WAPDA were off to whirlwind fashion when Qamar capitalised on solo spurt to squeeze the ball in the 95th seconds. It may turned out be the quickest goal of the competition and it will be tough fights for other front-runners to outime it. Dera Ismail Khan born Imran Niazi, only goal getter of Pakistan U-21 team in Beijing Olympics Qualifiers last year, made it 2-0 in the 20th minute. Qamar completed well-merited hat-trick with two quick strikes in the 32nd and 42nd minute. WAPDA led 4-0 at interval. The six-times national champion proved too strong for depleted Karachi's outfit in the second session too that belong to nippy Multan-born striker Arif Mehmood who finished as leading hitman in Pakistan Premiership 2007. Imran put the match beyond the grasp of SSGC with his second goal in the 56th minute it was left to Arif to scoop the ball into net in the 60th and 69th minute. He completed his hat-trick in the first minute of stoppages time. WAPDA's other goal getter was substitute Khuda Bakhsh in the 88th minute. Meanwhile, Navy who never won the National Championship and National Challenge Cup, struck twice in first session to beat debutant PEL of Lahore. Midfielder Nasir Hussain surged seamen ahead in the 16th minute and Sajjad Ahmed made it 2-0 twelve minutes later.
