OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE The Shahpur Kanjran Cattle Market has been facing sanitation problems and lack of medical facilities for the sacrificial animals, TheNation has learnt on Tuesday. The Market, situated at Multan Road, falls in the limits of TMA Iqbal Town. All the facilities including free entrance, tents, place for cattle, water supply, latrines, veterinary doctors etc are being provided by the CDGL to the market. On the other hand, the animal traders accused the town officials of taking bribe from them. There is no room for new animals in the market, they added. The contractor men and others demand Rs 500 to Rs 1500 for goats and cows respectively, the vendors alleged. There is no sanitation staff as heaps of garbage is seen in the market. The CDG has established only twelve toilets for thousands of the sellers. Though there is a medical camp set by the Livestock Department to provide free medical facilities to the animals but the animal owners including Muhammad Aslam from Khanewal and Azizul Hasan from Mian Channu said the doctors were reluctant to visit the sick animals. A trader Hazoor Buksh said some people charged Rs 300 to Rs 600 for each animal from us for providing place as the CDG failed to do so despite tall claims, he alleged. The space for makeshift market for sacrificial animals is not enough, so the private plot owners demand hundreds of rupees against provision of the land, the animal sellers said. The government, they said, should acquire more land to meet the requirement of the sacred occasion of Eidul Adha. The number of cattle markets must be increased, they demanded. Buyers zeal was not seen in the Mandi because high inflation rate badly affected their purchase power. The citizens who arrived at Mandi to purchase sacrificial animals said it was difficult for them to buy animals on such high rates. Town Officer Finance Mian Mazhar is appointed to run the affairs of the Mandi. Mohammad Hussain, Mohammad Javaid and other animal sellers complained that no government official including the TO(F) seemed serious to address their problems. Town Municipal Officer Mohammad Arif while talking to TheNation said, last year on the occasion of Eidul Azha nine cattle markets were set up but this year only six markets had been established. Talking about Shahpur Kanjran Mandi, the TMO said last year Mandi area was 700 kanal that shrank to 400 kanal this year as the Lahore Meat Market buy 300 kanal. We are doing out best to facilitate both the buyers and sellers, he said adding that the corrupt officials would be taken to task.
