Multan-A local court sent cleric Mufti Abdul Qavi, an accused in social media celebrity Qandeel Baloch murder case, on 14-day judicial remand in prison here on Wednesday.

The police earlier produced him before the court in tight security on the expiry of his two-day physical remand. The investigation officer told the court that the interrogation had been completed and he may be sent to the jail.

Police sources claimed that the accused told police during interrogation that the car used for the murder of Qandeel Baloch was owned by his cousin while the house, where she lived with her parents, was also property of his another relative namely Muhammad Nawaz. Sources added that Mufti further revealed during interrogation that the grandfather of Abdul Basit, the driver of the car, and his grandfather were cousins while Abdul Basit was his mureed (follower).

The driver Abdul Basit had driven Waseem, brother, and Haq Nawaz, cousin of Qandeel Baloch to Dera Ghazi Khan by his car after they murdered her in Multan. The sources said that Muhammad Nawaz tried to pressurise the parents of Qandeel Baloch to reconcile with Mufti and offered heavy amount as compensation to her parents on behalf of the cleric. On the other hand, the lawyer of Mufti Abdul Qavi prayed to the court to release his client as police failed to prove any charges against him. He added that Mufti did not have any connection with Qandeel’s murder.

The cleric, who was arrested by police on October 18 while trying to flee after cancellation of his bail, was indicted into the case under sections 302 and 109 on the request of Qandeel’s father, Muhammad Azeem. The social media celebrity was strangled by her real brother on July 16, 2016 in the name of honour. Although the murderer Waseem confessed to his crime, police suspected that Mufti provoked him to commit this crime.
