LAHORE - The Punjab Safe City Authority received more than one million bogus calls at its emergency helpline during the previous four months, officials said.

The police department is considering registration of criminal cases against those who made fake calls to the police emergency service Rescue-15.

According to the official data, the Punjab Safe City authority received at least 1.3 million calls at its helpline from July to October. Out of the total 1.3 million calls some 1.0726 million calls were found bogus. Only, 105,670 calls were genuine that required immediate police response during the last four months.

A senior official of the Safe City Authority told The Nation that no less than 48,000 people called Rescue-15 helpline to get information about various issues. “We have received, at the helpline, at least 82.5 percent bogus phone calls during the last four months,” the officer said. The department will ensure strict action against the fake callers in order to discourage the trend, he added.

On the other hand, the police also received at 189 calls related to armed robberies during the same period. Also, at least 54 women contacted the police to get help after being harassed by men. Some 13,514 people contacted the police for quick response following street fight or scuffles during the same period.

The police data also reveals that the Rescue-15 service received at least 418 calls related to attempted murder and 71 of motorcycle snatching from July to October.  The Punjab government last year launched the “Punjab Safe City Authority” project for the provincial metropolis with funding worth billions of rupees. In 2015, the provincial government had promulgated an ordinance to make all departments concerned sit together under the banner of an authority and ensure transparent and quick establishment of a security surveillance system with an estimate cost of Rs10 billion.

The Safe City is a concept for returning security, safety, and quality of life to today’s complex cities through the use of technology, infrastructure, personnel, and processes.
