KARACHI - Residents of Mawachh Goth, suburb area of Karachi, on Saturday staged a protest demonstration that later turned violent against a search operation by security forces overnight in the area.

Protectors blocked the Hub River Road against the last night arrests. The protestors alleged that the law-enforcing agencies arrested innocent laborers from their locality.

The demonstrators, emerging from the streets of the Goth, kept on playing hide-and-seek with the riot police who resorted to shelling, turning the area into a virtual battlefield. The commotion triggered holdup in traffic on Hub River Road, where women also participated in the protest. Police forced opened Hub River Road after consistent shelling; however, protesters, appearing from Mawachh Goth’s streets, kept pelting stones on the police personnel. The protesters said there is a youth among the arrested people who was going to be married a couple of days later.
