HAFIZABAD - Taking notice of a report that police are allegedly patronising drug pushers and bootleggers, the Punjab chief minister, the inspector general of police and the Gujranwala regional police officer have formed teams to investigate the issue, it is learnt.

However, the district police officer has suspended Javed Tarar for patronising drug peddlers of Bijli Mohallah. On the other side, the IGP formed a team headed by DSP Riaz Cheema. The team recorded statements of various citizens. However, some people who are connected with the illegal profession denied the allegations. According to sources, the CM and the RPO have sent special teams to ascertain whether the drugs are being sold under the patronage of some policemen.

Meanwhile, the police have rounded up more than two dozen “drug peddlers”, besides seizing heavy cache of charas, heroin and liquor from three women in front of the DPO Office.

Police bust gangsters: The Jalalpur Bhattian Police have smashed a gang of dacoits, burglars and cattle lifters and arrested its four members including its ring leader Nasir alias Nasroo.

On a tip-off, Jalalpur Bhattian Police SHO Malik Ghulam Abbas Khichi raided a hideout of the gang and arrested Nasr alias Nasroo who was notorious proclaimed offender wanted by different police stations in connection with murder, dacoity and cattle lifting cases. The police claimed to have arrested Nasroo, Mukhtar, Ansar and Mamma and seized five heads of stolen cattle, a mare and other articles worth million of rupees from them.

COPs SUSPENDED: Kassoki Police SHO Rai Muhammad Aslam was suspended by DPO Waqas Nazir on the charge of corruption and misuse of powers. The DPO also suspended SI Rana Zulfiqar and ASI Arif Ishaq of the City Police for negligence of the duties.
