Rawalpindi - Two persons died and two others got injured when a gas cylinder blew up with a big bang in a scrap shop here at Dheri Hassanabad, informed police yesterday.

The incident of blast occurred at 1:49 pm. Rescue 1122 rushed to the scene and shifted the injured and the dead to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital for treatment and autopsy. Those who died in the blast were identified as Sher Khan, 28, and Ajmal Khan, 27, whereas the injured included Adnan and a child Roman Raheem, 6.

A heavy contingent of police and Army troops reached the spot and cordoned off the area.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Farhan Aslam, two cousins Sher Khan and Ajmal Khan were opening the knob of a cylinder in a scrap shop, owned by Asghar Khan, when it blew up with a big bang. As a result, Ajmal Khan and Sher Khan died on the spot while two others sustained injuries. Rescue 1122 was called in and the rescuers shifted the victims to hospital. “The child received minor injuries and her parents took him to a nearby doctor,” he said.

He said that earlier it was assumed by the public and law enforcement agencies that terrorists blew up a car near a mosque where devotees were offering Zohr prayer. A team of bomb disposal squad also reached the spot.  

The doctors in DHQ handed over the dead bodies to heirs after carrying out post mortem.

Earlier, panic spread in the area following the blast.
