ISLAMABAD - Pakistani boxer M Waseem, silver medallist of Glasgow Commonwealth Games, is running from post to pillar to seek attention of the authorities concerned.

Waseem is still waiting for the reward of Rs two million for winning silver medal in the Commonwealth Games and Rs one million for winning Asian Games bronze medal for the country. Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has yet to release the cheques to Waseem.

In an interview with The Nation, Waseem requested the Inter Provincial Coordination (IPC) minister Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada, secretary Ijaz Chaudhry, PSB Director General Dr Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera and Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) president Doda Khan Bhutto to arrange at least three-month training camp for me at Cuba along with my coach M Tariq. I am training very hard under my coach’s watchful eyes, but this training is not enough for the upcoming Boxing World Cup in Qatar in June. That event will also be the ticket for the 2016 Olympics, as brilliant performance in the World Cup can help me earn direct entry to 2016 Olympics to be held Brazil.”

“Though I participated in the last year Commonwealth Games without any training camp, yet managed to win silver medal for the country in 52kg flyweight category. Now the world cup is round the corner and I need high level training under the supervision of my coach in Cuba so that I may help my country win gold in the upcoming Olympics. The PSB must lend a helping hand to me and my coach, as without my coach, the whole exercise will be futile one. I assure I will do my best to win any medal in the 2016 Olympics,” Waseem stated.

“I won bronze medal in Kings Cup in 2009, silver in Turkey in 2009, silver in 2010 SAAF Games in Bangladesh, gold in World Combat Games in Beijing, China in 2010, gold in 1st Benazir Bhautto International Boxing Championship in 2011 at Karachi, bronze in 2010 Commonwealth Games in India, silver in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2011. After that, I had to suffer for almost two years due to infighting between POA rival factions and we could not participate in international events. The year 2014 was memorable for me as I managed to win silver in Glasgow Commonwealth Games,” he said.

“I am completely ready for the mega fights, but for that purpose, I need international training. So far whatever I achieved is purely due to my efforts and coach’s trainings, but now, I have set my sights on higher targets. I request the PSB DG to issue directives for my training in Cuba, which will help me fulfill my ambitions and win laurels for the country at international stage. All my requests in the past fell on deaf ears, and now I, once again, want to request the IPC minister and PBF not to waste any time, as only a few months left in the world cup. I need to go to Cuba to train at world hub of boxing. I hope my request will be upheld and soon I will depart for Cuba along with my coach and I also hope incentives will also be released soon,” Waseem concluded.
