GUJRAT (INP) - Seven people, including a bank officer and a constable, were killed when armed motorcyclists fired shots at a car, police and eyewitness said Monday.

According to police, two armed motorcyclists opened indiscriminate fire on the vehicle of bank officer Muhammad Sharif at Tehsil Kharian of Gujrat, killing him and six others on the spot.

The deceased include, cop Shafique, Raja Mubeen, Raja Usman, Raja Mehboob and Raja Younis while the identity of a passer-by could not be confirmed. Police stated old enmity as the motive behind the shooting. Sharif’s brother Raja Asghar was killed some six months ago over the same dispute.

The incident triggered panic among the residents.  On the other hand, the relatives of the deceased staged a demonstration by placing the dead body on GT Road, calling for immediate arrest of the culprits.

However, they called off their protest on the assurance of the police chief. A case has been registered and police have launched a hunt for the culprits.
