MULTAN - The Pakistan Kissan Board (KBP) has demanded of the government to take notice of severe exploitation of sugarcane growers at the hands of sugar mills owners and adopt immediate steps to save poor farmers from injustice.

Talking to the journalists here on Monday, KBP Deputy Secretary General Munir Bodla pointed out that sugar mill owners deducted 10 per cent of the total cost of sugarcane under the pretext of its low sugariness. He added that despite a media campaign launched by the government, the sugar mill owners were involved in less weighing as their scales did not work properly. He asked the Punjab Chief Minister to carry out surprise visits to sugar mills and observe the whole injustice with his own eyes. He declared that the KBP and JI would raise the issue at all national forums.

He said that the sugar mills were out of control of state departments and instead the state officials and sugar mill owners had an underhand deal. “Resultantly, the sugar mill mafia is given free hand to fleece the growers,” he alleged. He said that the rate of sugarcane was already very low while the expenses had gone much higher. He said that the growers had got highly disappointed and they were changing their profession. He said that the agricultural experts had anticipated that sugarcane would be sowed on 25 per cent less area than the current one next year because of poor policies of the government as a result of which the country would face serious sugar crisis in coming days.
