LAHORE – Speakers at a seminar have stressed upon the government to utilise alternate energy sources like solar and wind and establish a green force to check ever-increasing environmental pollution in the province.

Environment Protection Department (EPD) Punjab and Eco Green jointly organised the seminar at Punjabi Complex Al-Hamra on Saturday in connection with upcoming World Environment Day on the theme “Green Economy, Does it include you”. Secretary Environment Punjab Saeed Iqbal Wahlah was the chief guest while Maqsood Director General EPD Ahmed Lak, President Eco Green Akhtar H Awan, Farhan Awan, Sheikh Anwar-ul-Haq, Sumaira Awan and Naseem-ur-Rehman Shah attended the seminar.

Saeed Wahlah said that the government, media and NGOs could play a key role in promoting green technologies. He said that no government department could work efficiently without powers and enforcement mechanism. The EPD has devised legislative framework for Punjab and amendments were made for addressing environmental issues, he said, adding that establishment of green force has also been proposed that would start a new era of monitoring and action against polluters.

Akhtar H Awan said that every individual has to come forward for controlling environmental pollution. He said that after the 18th amendment, the responsibilities of Environment Department Punjab has increased as it has own act, rules and regulations.

He urged the government to start environment-friendly projects for energy generation. He said that solar and wind technology were need of the hour as majority of industries were using tyres and plastic scrap as fuel due to ongoing load shedding.
