LONDON: Lou Reed is recovering after receiving a liver transplant, his wife Laurie Anderson has revealed. Speaking to The Times, Anderson said that the 71-year-old Velvet Underground frontman had been "dying" prior to undergoing the procedure. She said: "It's as serious as it gets. He was dying. You don't get it for fun." Reed, who has a well-documented history of alcohol and substance use, opted for surgery in Cleveland rather than his native New York, with Anderson labelling facilities in New York "dysfunctional". Anderson said that she was "awestruck" by the transplant process.–GN
