LAHORE - Muftis belonging to Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) in a joint decree have declared the death sentence of Mumtaz Qadri against the Quran and Sunnah. The SIC leaders have also announced countrywide strike on October 7 to protest against the sentence of Mumtaz Qadri, who killed former Punjab governor Salman Taseer in federal capital January this year. The decision to launch a countrywide strike by the SIC came after a meeting of its leaders with Sahibzada Muhammaf Fazal Karim in the chair on Sunday. The SIC meeting decided to observe October 7 as protest day, while member parties of the religious amalgam would launch peaceful demonstrations to register their protest against the death sentence of Mumtaz Qadri. Meanwhile, 500 muftis of SIC, which declared sentence of Mumtaz Qadri against the Quran and Sunnah also stated through their decree that 'punishment of blasphemy is clearly written in Holy Quran. They said that there were number of examples of killings of individuals who committed blasphemy against the Prophets during the reign of Khulfa-i-Rashideen. They said that the Ummah could not pardon any person who commits blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), however the Prophet himself has the right to forgive his blasphemer. They further said that the slain governor committed blasphemy, while the efforts to register a case against the Salman Taseer were not entertained and that is why Mumtaz Qadri for the love of Prophet killed his blasphemer. The decree also urged President Zardari to pardon his sentence. The Chief Justice of Pakistan has also been urged to take suo moto of the sentence and allow the muftis to present arguments with references from the Quran and Sunnah.
