RAWALPINDI (APP) - The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) is planning to pull down the citys 120-year-old Odean Cinema and construct a big plaza there with another commercial plaza at the site of Rex Cinema in Westrage area. Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) is planning to construct big plazas at Rex and Odean Cinemas sites which are located in the heart of the city, said Executive Officer Rawalpindi Cantonment Board, Manzoor Ahmed. Talking to APP here he said Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) has also decided to launch a big housing scheme on a former landfill site near Chakra Bhatta Chowk in Cantt area while the housing project will have all basic facilities which will be first of its own kind in the Cantt area. Rawalpindi Cantonment Board has nearly 550 kanals of land in the area which was being used earlier as a landfill site, he added. The housing scheme would have school, mosque, dispensary and market with all other basic facilities to make the housing scheme a model project. Under the plan for the project, public transport will also be started to facilitate the residents of the housing project from sadder and Raja Bazaar. Manzoor Ahmed said that it will be a model housing scheme which will have all basic facilities. According to the plan he said, a new state-of-the-art and affordable housing scheme will be developed on the Cantonment land. This will be the first-ever RCBs housing scheme to be developed on a vast land near Chakra linking Misriyal Road up to the Koh-i-Noor Mills on Peshawar Road. The area is currently a solid waste dumping site and has become an environment hazard for all the adjoining localities. The dumping site will be shifted to another place and the decision in his regard would be taken soon. Cantonment Executive Officer Rana Manzoor Ahmad told that over 300 residential plots would be available in the scheme. The scheme would have a centrally located commercial area, auditorium, park and play ground, mosque, Montessori and other essential public service facilities as per international town planning standards. The scheme will have efficient road system, footpaths and side walkways, water storage and supply network, fire-fighting system, a proper drainage and sewer system and recycling system. Rana Manzoor Ahmad further said that the cantonment board was hiring consulting firms for planning, designing and supervising the development of the housing scheme. The new scheme will provide an opportunity for the cantonment board to generate revenue through taxation for its development. To a question he said, all possible facilities are being provided to the residents of the cantonment area.
