BAJAUR AGENCY - The speakers at a seminar on International Day of persons with disabilities on Tuesday urged the government to enhance efforts for the provisions of basic needs and other civic facilities to the disabled persons of tribal areas.

A large number of disabled persons from across the agency besides tribal elder, leader of political and religious parties, social activists attended the seminar organized by Bajaur Disabled Persons Association in collaboration with an NGO here.

President of Bajaur Disabled Persons Association Ameer Zada, Kifayatullah Khan, Hazrat Wali, Bakhtwar Khan, Ajmal Khan and others spoke on the occasion. The speakers highlighted the importance of the international Day of persons with disabilities and said that observance of the day celebrating since 1992 was aimed to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well being of persons with disabilities.

The speakers said that the breaking barriers, open doors is the theme for the current International Day for people with disabilities meant to creating awareness of providing support of social and economic life to disable persons. They said the disable persons were the equal citizen of the society and they had equal right to get all those facilities available for other people but unfortunately the government and the society have ignored their rights due to which they are facing huge problems.

“Although the disable persons are the equal members of the society but they facing various problems including physical, social, economic and attitudinal barriers as well lack of equal access to basic resources, like education, employment, health care and social and legal support systems”, they added.

The speakers criticised the local administration for not providing basic facilities to the disabled persons of the tribal areas.

They claimed that the numbers of disabled persons in the agency had increased for the past several years and militancy and war against terrorism was the main cause of increasing the disabled persons adding that the current numbers of disabled persons in the agency have reached to eight thousands. Different activities like sports competitions and bicycle and wheelchair races were also held among the disabled persons at the government high school Khar ground.
