LAHORE -  On the call of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), the  journalists community throughout the country on Tuesday held demonstrations and rallies in order to protest against attack on the offices of Express Media Group in Karachi.

Giving the government an ultimatum, PFUJ President Rana Muhammad Azeem and Secretary General Amin Yousuf demanded that those responsible for the attack should be arrested within the next 72 hours.

They said that if they were not caught in the given period of time, journalists would hold country-wide rallies.

At least four armed assailants riding motorbikes on Monday threw two home-made bombs and started indiscriminate firing at the entrance to the building.

Earlier, the journalists gathered at  in front of the Punjab Assembly to condemn the attack on the media group.

Addressing the participants, PFUJ President said that the government had failed to give protection to media in the country.

“The attack on Express Media Group offices is shameful act of miscreants and failure of Sindh and Federal Government,” Rana Azeem added.

He said if the assailants are not arrested than the journalists would give call for sit-ins and boycott of government Press coverage.

Punjab Union of Journalists (PUJ) Secretary Amir Sohail said that such attack could never terrorise the journalists community.

Member Federal Executive Council (FEC) of PFUJ Mian Dawood, Farrukh Baseer, Lahore Press Club President Arshad Ansari and other senior journalists were also present on the occasion.

The journalists also gathered outside the Karachi Press Club to condemn this terrorist activity.

PFUJ Secretary Amin Yousuf, Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) President G.M Jamali, KUJ Secretary Wajid Raza Isfahani, CPNE’s Secretary General Dr Qamar Jabbar, Pakistan Association of Press Photographers, traders, lawyers, representatives of all political parties also attended the protest.

Addressing  the protesters, Amin Yousuf demanded provision of security to the journalists and media offices. He also demanded the arrest of the culprits involved in the terrorist attack within 72 hours. The journalists also staged protest demonstrations in Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, Quetta, Peshawar and Islamabad.
