KARACHI  - Seven people including four policemen were shot dead here on Monday. 

A local leader of Pakistan Sunni Tehreek was gunned down in Manghopir locality. Police said unidentified armed riders targeted the victim Raja Kamran, 33, and later fled from the scene. Police shifted the body to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy and later handed over to heirs. SHO Aslam Shah said Raja was the local leader of PST and was the resident of Surjani Town. The motive behind his assassination has yet to be ascertained. Further investigation was underway.

Separately, a driver by profession namely Manzoor, 35, was shot dead in New Vegetable Market in Sohrab Goth Industrial Area police precincts. Police shifted the body to ASH for autopsy. It said unknown armed men shot him once in his head when he was sleeping in his car. The victim was hailed from Azad Kashmir.

In another incident, a young woman was shot dead in Madina Town in Shah Latif Town police precincts. Police said the victim was identified as Summaiya, 22, wife of Fazal Wahid. She was going home after visiting her mother when unknown culprits targeted her. She succumbed to injuries on the way to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. Police said there was some dispute between the victim and her husband. Police detained her husband over his suspected involvement in the murder.

Gunmen, riding two motorbikes, on Monday killed four policemen in Ali Akber Shah Goth. City police chief Shahid Hayat is yet not sure about the group involved in the frequent killings of policemen.

Police mobile of Ibrahim Hydri police station was on routine patrolling when gunmen took positioned close to the police van and opened fire.

The driver of the mobile namely constable Mehmood remained unhurt in the assault. He took all four wounded cops including Sub Inspector Aftab, Head Constable Shafi, Constables Didar Ali and Akhter Ali to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

Dr Semi Jamali, incharge JPMC Emergency, informed that all the four victims were dead on their arrival to the hospital.

City Police Chief Shahid Hayat told The Nation that City is become more complex where political-religio criminals and militants of other outfits were engaged in attacking the police personnel. He said there were some 1,500 bulletproof jackets for the policemen performing duties across the City and the operation force strength is about 4,000. It would be a reaction of the killing of two militants in an encounter in the same area, he pointed out.

SP Malir Rao Anwar, in retaliation of the attack, immediately suspended the Head Moharrar of police station for not providing the bulletproof jackets to the cops on patrolling. Sources in the police station pointed out that they do not have enough jackets for each policeman on routine patrolling.

It is worth mentioning here that policemen are on the top in the priority list of terrorists. These attacks claimed the lives of 172 cops in 2013, and in the current year 31 police personnel and officers have been killed in the similar fashion.

The last coordinated attack on the policemen took place in Landhi area where some six cops were gunned down and another wounded when gunmen hurled a hand grenade and opened fire on two police mobiles.
