ISLAMABAD - Passengers in a flight of Pakistan International Airlines were stranded in the plane for over 30 minutes after workers of the airline staged a protest against imposition of new tax rates.

The flight, which landed at Benazir Bhutto International Airport from Karachi, could not be attached to a staircase as the flight’s operational staff was on a protest.

The national flag carrier’s union, a  Collective Bargaining Agent, protested the airline’s decision to cut Rs2,500 as tax from employees’ monthly salary and had announced to hold a demonstration at Islamabad airport on Tuesday. “The workers are right in their demands and we are negotiating with them, the matter will be resolved soon,” PIA spokesperson Rana Muhammad Hanif said.

Regarding the flight delay, the spokesperson said, “First employees deputed at flight operations started protesting while staff of other operations also joined them and as a result there was no staff left to serve.” He said that the issue will be resolved shortly,” he assured.
