LAHORE Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has vowed to defeat terrorism, saying he has convened a high-level meeting on law and order in Islamabad on Monday (tomorrow) to work out a solution. We have got to be united to defeat terrorism and have appealed to the international community to help us enhance the capability of our law-enforcement agencies, Gilani said. Talking to media men after visiting victims of Data Darbar suicide attacks at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Saturday, the Prime Minister said collective efforts by the government, the nation and the law-enforcement agencies were needed to eliminate the menace of terrorism. He said he has convened a meeting of the law-enforcement agencies to discuss and find out means to deal with terrorism. Responding to a question, he said through successful military operation in Swat and Malakand, terrorist strongholds in these areas had been smashed, but now terrorists were taking to the urban areas to create panic among the public. He maintained the government would take action wherever its writ was challenged. He, however, expressed the confidence that the government has the capability to combat terrorism. To another question regarding statements of Federal Ministers Rehman Malik and Babar Awan about 'Punjabi Taliban and demanding resignation of Punjab Government for failing to control terrorism, the Prime Minster said he had never used the term 'Punjabi Taliban and asked everyone to avoid the politics of blame game as the country could not afford this situation. He said if Malik had any credible actionable evidence about his claim, he must pass the same on to the Punjab Government. He said PPP was a coalition partner in Punjab as such it was its own government and how could he ask for the resignation of his own government. Action in Southern Punjab will only be possible after concrete evidence, he added. The PM said when his government took over he found terrorism the biggest issue. He thanked the political leadership for showing maturity and extending cooperation to the government to curb this scourge. He said he firmly believed that terrorism could not be eliminated without combined efforts of the government, law-enforcement agencies and the people. He stressed the need for enhancing the capacity of the law-enforcement agencies for which, he had also asked the international community to help. He said terrorism is not just the problem of Punjab province rather its a challenge for the whole country and all political forces. To a question regarding statement of PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif alleging failure on the part of the government to implement the parliamentary resolution on dealing with terrorism, he said his government respected both Parliament and Mian Sahib. The resolution, he said, would be implemented in letter and spirit. The Prime Minister said Data Darbar incident was of a very serious and grave nature which had been condemned strongly not inside but outside the country also. Earlier, Gilani visited the Data Darbar shrine and laid a chaddar on the shrine. He also presented bouquets to injured people at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. APP adds: Prime Minister Gilani has ordered employment for M Abid Adil s/o Muhammad Iqbal, resident of Sandha, Lahore who got injured in the suicide attack on Data Darbar. The PM directed the Minister for Interior to contact him later and gave him appropriate appointment as per his qualification in the Ministry of Interior.
