KARACHI - A delegation of women parliamentarians visited the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) head office. According to the PIA spokesman, the delegation comprising Dr Attiya Inayatullah, MNA and Convener, Sub Committee on Women Harassment at the workplace along with Bushra Gohar, MNA and Chairperson of Standing Committee for Women Protection, Khushbakht Shujaat, MNA and member of the committee, Qudsia Arshad, MNA and member of the committee and Razia Sultana, secretary of sub committee on Women Protection visited to the head office where they met with the officials. The parliamentarians have an intensive discussion on the issue of women protection at the workplace with the Managing Director PIA, Capt Mohammad Aijaz Haroon and Director General CAA, Air Cdr. (Rtd) M. Junaid Ameen and other officials of PIA. Beside, a seminar was organised by Womens Forum PIA in which they discussed with the women employees of the airline. The parliamentarians assured the women employees of their full support with regard to their victimisation, discrimination or harassment issues. On the occasion, Dr Attiya Inayatullah, convener of the Sub Committee on Harassment at the Workplace said that the group of parliamentarians has visited the PIA as it is one of the largest public sector organisations which have leading number of female employees. After getting 33 percent representation in the parliament, 11.3 percent female representation in any public sector organisation like PIA is a mighty achievement. We want to provide the female population of our country with equal opportunity of dignified jobs. With a larger number of women working in the office, she added. She said that the Standing Committee for Women Protection in parliament has announced to form Women Protection Committee (WPC) under the Harassment at the workplace Law 2010 in every public sector organisation. The management of PIA has taken initiative by forming a WPC to address the issues put forward by the female employees of the PIA. It is the need of time that women realise their rights and speak about their genuine issues. We want to provide these working women with an atmosphere that could help them not only to improve their living standard but also make them realise their true role in society, said Dr. Attiya. Bushra Gohar, Chairperson of Standing Committee of Parliament for Women Protection, expressed her views that a courageous step has been taken by the women in the airline by complaining about the harassment at the workplace. The WPC formed by the PIA management has given us assurance that the complaints raised by the female employees will be addressed properly. Previously, there was a communication gap between the management and the employees, this gap can now be bridged by putting the actual complaints in the WPC. MD PIA, Capt. Mohammad Aijaz Haroon has provided his full support and commitment to the WPC in order to solve these complaints. We want our women to be the productive part of our public sector organization, so that they can be the useful part of our society, said Gohar. Khushbakht Shujaat, member of the committee, Qudsia Arshad, member of the committee and Razia Sultana, Secretary of Sub Committee on Women Protection also appreciated the role of women in the PIA. While giving out the details of the WPC, Mariam Aftab and Maheen F. Ali said that the WPC is seeking respect and dignity for the female employees of the airline. The aim of this committee is to facilitate the women in the national flag carrier to perform their duties with respect and honor. A proper and intensive inquiry will be conducted if any complaint of harassment would be forwarded to the WPC and appropriate actions will be taken. On the second day of their visit, the women parliamentarians went along with the Women Protection Committee (WPC) members to PIA Baby Day Care Centre, Al Shifa Trust and the Airhostesses hostel. The committee members listen to complaints of the airhostesses and assured to take up the matter with the management. End
