LAHORE - Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah of Lahore High Court on Tuesday issued another notice to the federal government to submit reply on March 17, in an application seeking directions to hold election through show of hand.

A deputy attorney general appeared in the court and requested for more time to submit reply. The judge accepted his request and gave time to the federal government till the said date.

Advocate Azhar Siddique had filed this application in his pending petition for non-implementation of Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution during scrutiny of candidates for upcoming Senate election.

Applicant said that the government intention to hold senate election through secret ballot is malafide and it would provide horse-trading and corruption. He said that the government should ensure free, fair and transparent senate election and these could only be held through show of hand.

He prayed the court to direct the government to introduce a mechanism to hold transparent election.

HEARING ADJOURNED: The Lahore High Court on Tuesday adjourned until today (Wednesday) the hearing of a petition challenging acceptance of nomination papers of PML-N candidate Professor Sajid Mir who is Ameer of Markazi Jamat-e-Ahle Hadit.

At the outset of hearing, the counsel of Prof Sajid Mir sought time to submit reply. Justice Ayesha A Malik of the LHC was hearing the case.  The judge accepted his plea and adjourned the case.

Qazi Hussain Siraj, the petition, had submitted that the commission had accepted Prof Sajid’s paper on PML-N ticket, which was illegal as he was   Ameer of Markazi Jamat-e-Ahle Hadith, so being ameer of a party he cannot contest election on the ticket of another party. He said he was not professor according to the criteria of Higher

Education Commission as he did not have a PhD degree. And he had two degrees on in English and other in Islamiat, said the petitioner.

He further said that Prof Sajid did not qualify to a candidate under article 62 and 63 of the Constitution.  He requested the court to declare his nomination papers as illegal and restrain him from contesting election.
