Speaking at the annual dinner hosted by Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry in honour of Islamabad based foreign diplomats, President Zardari has stated that granting Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to India is aimed at promoting business and trade between the two sides. Speaking in categorical terms, he said that its objective was to improve economic condition of the people. In addition, Mr Zardari said that the government was encouraging public-private partnership and urged the business community to participate in it and play its vital role in building up national economy on solid foundations. In his address, Chamber’s President Irfan Qaiser Sheikh said that the President’s wish could only be translated into reality if India were to adopt a positive approach. Otherwise it would be merely a one-sided affair. Already serious apprehensions are being voiced about the negative impact of giving New Delhi a free hand which has not changed its unfavourable trade tariffs. We must ensure that Pakistan’s national interests are protected and India is not given undue advantage in the deal.
