LAHORE - As per Unesco standards, 25 per cent of the total education budget should be allocated for higher education in the new budget while a new commission on higher education standards be formed at the federal level as mandated in the constitution.

The next NFC Award must be finalized and announced immediately so that every province has adequate resources for education and health. The ban on student union must be lifted immediately.

These demands were made by the participants of a round table conference on the implementation status of 18th amendment in higher education sector.

Former vice chancellor Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan, Dr. Syed Alqma, former vice chancellor University of Sargodha, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Akram Ch, CPNE President, Mujib-ur-Rehman Shami and Executive Director, Centre for Inclusive Governance, Abdullah Malik addressed the conference among others.

They urged the provincial governments to strengthen provincial higher education set ups through provision of adequate financial resources so that the growing needs of Pakistani universities may be met in an effective way. They also demanded immediate resolution of HEC-COMSATS dual degree issue by recognizing the degrees of 2700 affected students

A unanimous resolution adopted by the participants demanded that the autonomy of universities and academic freedom at campuses must be respected by federal and provincial higher education commissions as per spirit of 18th constitutional amendment.
