LAHORE - Former federal minister Sardar Talib Nakai is set to leave the Pakistan Muslim League-Q after an association for about a decade and join the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf at a ceremony in Pattoki today (Wednesday).

The political importance of Nakai can be gauged from the fact that Imran Khan is personally going to participate in the ceremony. Nakai’s departure will prove another setback to the Muslim League faction of Chaudharys of Gujrat who have already lost many of their bigwigs either to the PTI or the ruling Muslim League.

Other notable PML-Q leaders who had already joined the PTI include, Mian Muhammad Azhar, Khursheed Mehmood Kasuri, Jahangir Tareen, Ishaq Khakwani, Riaz Fatyana, Ghulam Sarwar Khan, Ayla Malik, Chaudhary Shehbaz, Chaudhary Farrukh Altaf, Rai Hassan Nawaz, Akmal Cheema, Javed Safdar Kahloon and Ajmal Cheema, Ahmad Ali Khan Dreshak, Mian Muhammad Aslam Iqbal, Muhammad Jahanzaib Khan Khichi, Muhammad Sibtain Khan, Nighat Intasar Bhatti, Sardar Ali Raza Khan Dreshak and Zafar Cheema.

The PML-Q, which enjoyed absolute power from 2002 to 2008, has failed to stop defections after losing the general elections in 2008.

With Talib Nakai joining, the PTI will get a political edge over its opponents in District Kasur. The PTI has already in its basket Khursheed Mehmood Kasuri, former foreign minister and a political bigwig of the same district.

Local political observers believe, the combination of Khursheed Mehmood Kasuri and Sardar Talib Nakai could turn the tables on the PTI opponents in the upcoming local bodies’ polls in District Kasur. Talib Nakai’s decision would dent the political influence of Rana Phool’s family in the district, affiliated with ruling Muslim League in the upcoming local elections.

Talib Nakai is son-in-law of late Arif Nakai, who was believed to be the godfather of Nakai family’s politics in District Kasur. Arif Nakai was the chief minister of Punjab from September 13, 1995 to November 3, 1996 in the coalition government of Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Junego. Talib Nakai, who will join Imran Khan, is former federal minister for housing.

The brief political history of Nakai family is as under.

Sardar Pervaiz Hasan Nakai, son of Sardar Arif Nakai, served as MPA: Sardar Muhammad Asif Nakai, son of Sardar Arif Nakai, served as MPA, MNA and Minister of State for Housing and Works in 2002. Sardar Atif Nakai, son of Sardar Arif Nakai, former Tehsil Nazim of Tehsil Pattoki (2002 to 2007).
