Against the ruling PML-N, an electoral alliance of the opposition parties under the leadership of Nawab of Bahawalpur Salahuddin Abbasi will be formed to contest the local bodies elections in Bahawalpur, a PML-Q leader said here on Tuesday.

PML-Q Central Vice President and MNA Chaudhry Tariq Bashir Cheema was talking to newsmen at the residence former city nazim Muhammad Ejaz Khan Baloch where PPP Bahawalpur President Malik Aamar Yar Warran and Bahawalur National Awami Party leader Sahibzada Faizur Rashid Abbasi were also present.

Cheema said that in Bahawalpur district, the opposition parties candidates would contest the polls on one electoral symbol. “Soon, we will convene a meeting of the opposition and likeminded groups which will decide all the relevant matters,” he said.

The MNA further said that the proposed electoral alliance will contest on all 88 rural union councils of Bahawalpur out of which the names of 44 of Hasilpur and Yazman tehsils union councils’ candidates have been finalised. He urged the masses to compare the performance of PML-N lawmakers with the former union nazimeen with his twice 8-year tenure as district nazim of Bahawalpur. He claimed that he provided at least Rs50 million each for development schemes. He vowed to defeat PML-N candidates in the local bodies polls. He thanked former city nazim Ejaz Khan Baloch for hosting a party in the honour of the opposition parties activists.

Responding to questions, the PML-Q leader underlined a need for a grand alliance of opposition parties to contest local bodies polls against PML-N in Punjab province. He said that Ch Shujaat and Pervaiz Elahi will return from abroad in second week of the current months so the dialogues with the other political parties will restart. He lauded the role of Pak Army in the elimination of terrorism, and said that both the PPP and MQM were two realities of Sindh province. He supported legal action against armed wing of MQM but stressed that its leadership should not be removed with force. He said that all the parties should be allowed to work freely for democracy in the country.

He also supported to initiating an operation against criminals, corrupt politicians and bureaucrats in Punjab, and said only the Army was implementing the National Action Plan in its true spirits.

To another question, he said that he had no objection on the joining of Ex-PPP MNA Arif Aziz Sheikh to the proposed opposition group. He revealed that BNAP MPA Makhdoom Syed Iftikhar Hassan Gillani will also be approached for the purpose. However, he opposed the inclusion of ex-tehsil nazim Makhdoom Syed Samiul Hassan in the opposition election alliance due to his past attitude.

Earlier, Malik Aamar, BNAP leader Sahibzada Faizur Rasheed Abbasi, District President PML-Q Bahawalpur Syed Salahuddin Ahmed Jeelani and Khan Baloch also addressed the party.

Meanwhile, Malik Aamar Yar stated that he was not joining Pakistan Teheek-e-Insaf and expressed his full confidence in the leadership of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari.

He announced to field candidates in all 26 union councils of his constituency NA-184 Bahawalpur 2. He said that a convention of the opposition parties will be held in Dhorkot where his cousin Malik Zulqarnain Warran will contest for the slot of chairman of union council.

To a question, he said that group leader Nawab Salahuddin Abbasi and former District Nazim Bahawalpur Chaudhry Tariq Bashir Cheema will also address the convention. Warran stated that President PPP South Punjab Makhdoom Syed Ahmed Mehmood was trying his utmost to reactivate estranged party workers and to organise the party.
