DERA GHAZI KHAN - The tall government claims have been exposed as it has failed to manage even 5,000 cusecs of Suri Lund hill torrent due to delay in the completion of Suri Lund Water Management Project aimed to control the hill torrent of up to 90,000 cusecs here.

On Thursday, Suri Lund hill torrent of about 5,000 cusec entered Basti Hussain Abad, Jhoke Nim Wali and Jhoke Fazal Wali, damaging all the muddy houses in its path, said local residents. Fazal Lund, resident of Hussain Abad, said that more than 350 houses had badly been affected by the hill torrents. Most of people have left their house due to fear of falling of houses, he added. He alleged that local residents had lodged complaints against encroachment on the main waterway of flash flood; to save the villages but Irrigation Department did not take any action against the encroachers. Fazal alleged that apart from natural calamity, it is the DG Khan Construction Division Irrigation Department’s negligence that brought devastation to the villages.

Torrential rains of three days have also added to the miseries of more than 150,000 people of Taunsa Sharif City. Currently, Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Taunsa Sharif, Police Station City, Post Office, Kalma Chowk, Mohallah Nazim Abad, Murtaza Town, Kachi Abadi and Housing Colony have been submerged in water.  Sanghar hill torrent has also entered Manghrotha village of Taunsa Shirf. People are shifting to safer place to save their lives.

It is worth mentioning that hundreds of local people including advocates and businessmen had protested against existing Executive Engineer and Sub Divisional Officer of DG Khan Construction Division DG Khan Irrigation Department in last year for their corruption. Present SDO is enjoying his position under shelter of court stay order. That is why, the people had demanded an inquiry committee to probe the assets of the SDO as he has become millionaires in a short span of time.
