ISLAMABAD - The Special Prosecutor of National Accountability Bureau in Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Overseas Pakistanis Zulfi Bukhari case, Imran Shafiq, has submitted his resignation to Prosecutor General Accountability on Tuesday.

Imran Shafique was also the NAB prosecutor in former finance minister Ishaq Dar corruption case. He wants to join the Islamabad Bar Association as an independent lawyer.

According to the available copy of resignation of Shafique with The Nation: “With due veneration, It is submitted that I was inducted as Special Prosecutor (High Court) on 2 May 2017 In NAB (pr). Islamabad, for a period of one year, which was further extended and is continuing.

He said apart from contesting hundreds of cases pending before the Islamabad High Court, with a success ratio up to 88 percent, It was a great privilege for me to represent NAB as a prosecution team member in PANAMA cases and as a lead prosecutor in the reference against Muhammad lshaq Dar, ex-senator/finance minister and I was also assigned the task of conducting appeals against acquittal of Asif All Zardai and to represent NAB in mega scam before the Lahore High Court, Lahore.

It also said that the accused lshaq Dar, during the pendency of the reference, escaped from the process of law and after a hard legal battle from Accountability Court to the High Court, I succeeded in getting concluded proceedings under section 512 Cr.P.C as well as sections 87, 88 Cr.P.C. I also successfully assisted the  Accountability Court in confiscating the properties and assets of accused Ishaq Dar, In my earnest estimation, my job to the extent of Muhammad lshaq Dar stands accomplished, unless the accused is arrested and taken back to the Country in future.

It further said: “My service with the NAB has been a great and profound learning experience. I tried to perform my duties to the best of my abilities, to the zenith of my honesty and to the utmost of my skills. My professionalism during the service has widely been acknowledged not only by the Bench and the Bar but by the opposing counsels as well. On account of some personal reasons, I find myself unable to continue with NAB any further, thus constrained to tender Instant resignation.

The Instant resignation may kindly be considered as one month advance notice. I realise my national duty to combat corruption and as a lead prosecutor in lshaq Dar’s case, I would be available to tender my assistance, even after leaving NAB. For now, | an eager to Join the Bar as an Independent professional lawyer to play my part in easing the frustrations faced by the ordinary litigants.”

On the other hand, spokesperson NAB said in a statement that NAB has not received resignation of Imran Shafique and after receipt of his one month notice/resignation, it will be dealt with according to law. He requested media to avoid speculations in this regard.

Earlier, Khawaja Harris, Defence Counsel of Nawaz Sharif while making his conclusive arguments in Al-Azizia corruption reference stated that prosecution could not provide any evidence regarding Benami-transaction in the court. He said Hussain Nawaz sent money to Nawaz Sharif from Hill Metal did not fulfill all the requirements about Benamidar.

Meanwhile, the Defence Counsel filed a plea to get exemption for Nawaz Sharif from court's attendance, on which Judge Accountability Court Arshad Malik remarked that it’s too much. He said every day, a new plea has been filed to get exemption from court's attendance, if he did not say anything, it does not mean to file new one in a routine, remarked Judge Accountability Court Arshad Malik. Due to absence of Nawaz Sharif, statement of Nawaz Sharif in 342 of Flagship reference could not be recorded.

The judge stated that he was hoping that Nawaz Sharif after attending hearing at the apex court will ensure his attendance at NAB Accountability Court. Judge Accountability Court release orders for Nawaz Sharif to record his statement in Flagship investment reference on Wednesday.
