SAHIWAL - The administration on Thursday sealed off the offices of eight housing societies in a crackdown on illegal housing schemes in Sahiwal division.

Commissioner Qazi Muhammad Ashfaq Qureshi had directed Assistant Commissioner Farooq Akmal to take stern action against those housing schemes that did not clear the dues for approval. As a result, the offices of MS Homes, Jinnah Block, Haider Block, Shadab Town, Dubai Gardens, Johar Town and other housing schemes were sealed off, while Rs 2 million from Zaheer City Housing Scheme, Rs 0.8 million from Bismillah Block and Rs 1.5 million from Zaka Restaurant were recovered in pending dues.

It may be mentioned here that work on over 20 housing schemes is in progress without an approval from the authorities concerned. These include a number of unapproved schemes that have been causing huge losses to the state kitty.

According to a survey, these housing schemes are violating the rules and regulations laid down by the provincial government.

MURDERER GETS DEATH SENTENCE: A lower court on Thursday awarded death sentence to a murder accused, namely Sardar Ali.

Additional District & Sessions Judge Anwar Ahmad Qureshi, while handing down the judgement, ordered the convict to pay Rs 0.2 million as compensation to the heirs of the victim, who was from Chak-15 Tukkara. Raiz was killed in 2006 over the dispute of an abduction case.

Failing to pay the amount, the murderer would undergo rigorous imprisonment of six-month. The court, however, acquitted his other accomplices, namely Tanveer and Saleem. Earlier, the court had awarded death sentence to Sardar Ali's co-accused, Ramzan. But Ali had absconded at that time. A new trial was conducted after his arrest.
