ISLAMABAD (APP) The Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Reforms (PCCR) on Thursday rejected amendments in the local bodies system in the country and decided to retain the Local government law in its present shape. According to informed sources, after discussions on Article 140-A of the Constitution, it was also agreed that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would conduct local bodies election. Article 140-A enunciates that Each Province shall, by law, establish a local government system and devolve political, administrative and financial responsibility and authority to the elected representatives of the local governments. The other Article, which came under discussion, was 151 regarding Inter-Provincial Trade. The sources maintained that the suggestions regarding the transfer of powers from Centre to provinces about the imposition of restrictions on trade between provinces and anywhere in Pakistan were rejected and these powers would remain with the Parliament. It is also expected that the final reading of the constitutional reforms would start from Friday after which the process of amendments would be geared up so as to finalise the work of the committee.
