KARACHI - The 59th Pakistan Flower Show 2010 was inaugurated by renowned author and humorist Mushtaq Ahmed Khan Yousafi in an impressive and colourful ceremony held at DHA Sea view Public Park on Thursday evening. The Annual Flower Show was arranged by Horticultural Society of Pakistan (HSP) in collaboration with Defence Housing Authority and Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC). The venue presented an exotic view of colour and beauty with fragrance of flowers and roses adding to the ambience of the scene. Speaking on the occasion Mushtaq Ahmed Yusufi in a characteristic humorous tone lauded the efforts of HSP for organising a splendid floral show. He said that the efforts of HSP in giving cleaner and greener environments to Karachi and in promoting spots of natural beauty in form of flowers, gardens and parks etc was simply commendable. He gave a literary description of beautiful flowers and the beauty of natural environment in a unique poetic diction. Yusufi termed love for flowers as the essence of life. He said that flowers reflected natural beauty and left indelible marks of aesthetic delight and creative charm on human mind. He said that in this materialistic world, the urban metropolitan has become the sprawling jungle of concrete but the charming beauty of colorful flowers was refreshing and a blissful joy of life. He added that the natural spots in forms of gardens, parks and open grounds must be promoted as they provided aesthetic delight to the people and had a soothing and calming effect on their nerves. Earlier the President of HSP Faheem Siddiqui in his welcome address outlined the activities of his organisation in promoting horticultural awareness in society. He said that HSP was actively engaged in beautifying the environment of the city. He reiterated that flowers were essential for life and as such greenery and horticulture needed to be promoted at all levels. He reiterated that competitions like flower shows would add to the beauty of the city and provide the public with healthy recreational avenues. A large number of individuals, organisations, amateurs and professionals participated in the flower show in various categories. CDGK Beachview Park, CBC Bukhari Park and CBC Rahat Park got first prizes in the categories of large, medium and small parks. In the category of beautification of spots, DHA Gizri Hilltop got the first prize while DHA Momin Rockery was second in the category. KPT Rest House, KPT Garden Park, FlagStaff House, PNS Shifa, DHA Country & Golf Club, Defence Authority Tooba Mosque, College of Physicians and DHA Degree College For Men got first prizes in various categories. Cantonment Board Clifton was declared the overall champion of the Flower Show and awarded Abdul Sattar Pirzada Trophy. The chief guest, Mushtaq Ahmed Yusufi later went around different exhibits and distributed prizes amongst the winners in various categories. President HSP Mr AK Khan was also present on the occasion. The Floral Show will remain open for the general public till Sunday.
