Rawalpindi - A ruling party member of National Assembly (MNA) is allegedly trying to influence police investigations to save the mastermind behind the killing of lady health worker Shabana Malik, reliable sources revealed to The Nation on Saturday.

The sources added that some police officers were trying to give a clean-chit to the mastermind after being influenced by the MNA that was why police including station house officer (SHO) police station Westridge did not show the arrest of mastermind and four of his paid accomplices. The mastermind, who was arrested by police from Sihaam, was identified as Chaudhry Zahoor-ul-Haq, son of Haji Banaras. However, the names of four other accused could not be known, the sources added.

According to the sources, police arrested the mastermind and four others but a sitting MNA of Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) has jumped into the arena to save the skin of the mastermind, who is said to be a rich man and associated with business of ghee and cooking oil at Sihaam. The sources said that the MNA had been making hectic efforts to influence investigations of the murder case.

When contacted SHO Malik Tahir said that no single accused of the murder case had been arrested so far. “I am the SHO and telling you with full responsibility that police have not arrested any single person in connection with Shabana murder case,” he added. When told that investigation officer of the case had confirmed that five men including the mastermind had been arrested, the SHO was not ready to accept the truth.

Earlier, Sub-Inspector Yasir Rabbani, who is investigation officer of the case, while talking to The Nation on September 30 last said that police had rounded up the mastermind and four of his paid accomplices. “We are keeping the arrest of five men secret as we have to arrest two more accused,” he had said.

The IO had also requested to this scribe not to file this report as police were yet to arrest two more accused involved in the armed attacks on Shabana Malik. The IO was of view that the mastermind of the lady murder case hired two groups to end the life of Shabana. The first group carried out attack on Shabana on July 14 in which she survived but the second attack launched by other group proved fatal, he added. The sharp contrast in the statements of the SHO and IO clearly indicates that efforts are under way to save the skin of the mastermind, the sources said.

No top police officer was available for his comments on the issue.
